Delaware, OH –- More than 150 volunteers attended a Friday afternoon reception honoring them for their service to the residents of Willow Brook Christian Communities.
Jean Flahive received the Gift of Love Award from Willow Brook Christian Village. Flahive and her late husband Ed raised their combined family in Delaware and moved into the Willow Brook Christian Village retirement community more than 12 years ago.
She has been a driving force among the independent residents, leading them in almost every volunteer capacity available. “Jean has a personal mission to make new residents feel at home,” said Marlene Andersen, the director of resident life activities. “She is a goodwill ambassador to visitors and a blessing to us.”
Marilyn Schroeder is one of Willow Brook at Delaware Run’s “crowning jewels,” according to folks who nominated her for the Gift of Love Award for Willow Brook at Delaware Run.
A retired librarian, she was lauded by others for organizing and keeping Willow Brook’s library in order.
“Marilyn has organized a library at Delaware Run that is public-library quality,” said CEO Larry Harris. “She obviously loves the written word, and life is richer here because of her.”
“In this community of kind people,” said one nominator, Marilyn quietly, without fanfare, helps residents who have no family near.” She initiated the Friends Who Drive group to take people to their doctors in Columbus or Delaware, waiting patiently to bring them home again.
“If you are under the weather Marilyn will walk your dog, go to the grocery for you or pick up a prescription,” the nominations continue.
Schroeder organized and leads a writers’ group that meets monthly and is in the process of producing a collection of writings from group members. She also publishes the resident newsletter, The Runner, every week.
Another said “Marilyn just makes life work.”
The Gift of Love Award is presented to a volunteer by the residents and families on each of Willow Brook’s three campuses.
The names of the award recipients are inscribed on plaques in the lobby of each Willow Brook community.
